Frequently asked questions

Do I need an accountant to use Origami Books?

No, but Origami Books makes your accountant's job much easier. You handle the day-to-day categorisation; they get a finished pack (including a draft AFS) they just need to review and sign off.

Which banks are supported?

All of them. Absa, Capitec, Discovery, FNB, Investec, Nedbank, Standard Bank, TymeBank and any other South African bank that lets you download a statement. We read OFX, QFX, CSV and Excel, and we match the columns automatically rather than making you map them by hand. If your bank only gives you a PDF, Claude reads that too on the AI plan.

What does AI auto-categorisation actually do?

It reads your full transaction history, applies the Chart of Accounts you've set up, and suggests a category for each transaction, usually getting 90%+ right. You confirm or correct; every correction becomes a permanent rule so the same vendor is handled automatically next time.

Is my financial data safe?

Yes. Data is stored in a South African-region Supabase (Postgres) database, encrypted at rest and in transit. We follow POPIA guidelines. Your data is never used to train AI models.

What is the Claude / MCP integration?

If you use Claude Desktop or Claude Mobile, you can connect Origami Books as a tool. That means you can type "How much did I spend on software subscriptions last quarter?" and get a real answer from your actual books, no copying and pasting.

Can I switch plans later?

Yes. You can upgrade from Essentials to AI (or downgrade) at any time. Billing adjusts pro-rata from the next cycle.

What does 'private beta' mean?
