Terms of Service
Last updated: 22 May 2026
1. About Origami Books
Origami Books is a bookkeeping and SARS-compliance software service operated by Origami Consulting Group (Pty) Ltd (Reg 2022/887986/07, VAT 4810315038), a South African private company with its principal place of business in Johannesburg, South Africa (“we”, “us”, or “Origami Books”). These Terms of Service (“Terms”) form a binding agreement between Origami Consulting Group (Pty) Ltd and you, the customer or user (“you”).
By creating an account or using any part of the service you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
2. Private Beta Status
Origami Books is currently in private beta. During this phase:
- Features, pricing, and functionality may change at any time without prior notice.
- The service is provided “as is” without any warranty of uninterrupted availability or fitness for a particular purpose.
- We may invite or revoke beta access at our discretion.
We will provide reasonable notice before making changes that materially reduce the service or affect paid subscribers.
3. Subscriptions and Billing
3.1 Plans
Origami Books offers the following plans (prices inclusive of VAT where applicable under South African law):
- Essentials — R 149 / month: Bank import, receipt capture, SARS deadline calendar, accountant pack export.
- AI Plan — R 249 / month: Everything in Essentials plus AI-powered auto-categorisation, receipt OCR, and AFS draft generation.
3.2 Free Trial
New accounts receive a 30-day free trial with access to all features of the selected plan. No payment is required until the trial ends. You may cancel at any time during the trial at no charge.
3.3 Billing
Subscriptions are billed monthly in South African Rand via PayFast. We do not store your card details; PayFast processes payments under their own terms. By subscribing you authorise PayFast to charge the nominated payment method on each renewal date.
3.4 Cancellation
You may cancel at any time from your account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period — you retain access until then and will not be charged again. We do not offer pro-rata refunds for partial months.
3.5 Price changes
We will give you at least 30 days' notice by email before increasing prices. Continued use after the notice period constitutes acceptance.
4. Acceptable Use
You agree to use Origami Books only for lawful bookkeeping purposes in connection with a legitimately operating business. In particular you must not:
- Use the service to record, conceal, or facilitate unlawful financial activity, including money laundering or tax fraud.
- Abuse AI features or attempt to exceed usage quotas through automated bulk requests.
- Use a single subscription to manage more than one legal entity's books unless you have a written agreement with us for multi-entity access.
- Reverse-engineer, resell, or sublicense the service or its underlying AI components.
- Upload content that infringes third-party intellectual property or violates any law.
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that breach this section.
5. Important Disclaimers — Not Professional Advice
Origami Books is bookkeeping software, not an accounting, auditing, or tax advisory service. Nothing in the service — including automatically generated figures, categorisation suggestions, AFS drafts, VAT working papers, or deadline reminders — constitutes professional accounting, audit, or tax advice.
All outputs are drafts that require review and sign-off by a qualified accountant or tax practitioner before submission to SARS or any third party. We are not liable for any SARS penalties, interest, or assessments arising from late, incorrect, or incomplete filings, regardless of whether those filings were informed by outputs from Origami Books.
You retain full responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of your financial records and all submissions to SARS.
6. Intellectual Property
6.1 Your data
You own all financial data, documents, and records you upload to the service. We acquire no ownership rights over your data.
6.2 Licence to us
You grant Origami Consulting Group (Pty) Ltd a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, process, and transmit your data solely to the extent necessary to provide and improve the service for you. We do not use your financial data to train AI models (see the Privacy Policy for details on Anthropic data handling).
6.3 Our software
The Origami Books software, design, trademarks, and all associated intellectual property remain the exclusive property of Origami Consulting Group (Pty) Ltd. Nothing in these Terms transfers any ownership of our IP to you.
7. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by South African law:
- Our total aggregate liability to you for any claim arising from or related to the service is capped at the total fees you paid to us in the 12 months preceding the claim.
- We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of revenue, loss of data, loss of goodwill, or SARS penalties, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.
Nothing in these Terms excludes liability for fraud, gross negligence, or any other liability that cannot be excluded by law.
8. Termination
Either party may terminate the agreement at any time. You may cancel via your account settings; we may terminate or suspend your account by email notice if you breach these Terms or if we discontinue the service.
Data on termination: After termination you will have a 30-day window to export your data. After that window your data will be deleted in accordance with the retention schedule in our Privacy Policy, subject to any legal retention duties.
9. Changes to These Terms
We will notify you of material changes to these Terms by email at least 30 days before the changes take effect. Continued use of the service after the notice period constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
10. Governing Law and Disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa. Any dispute arising from or relating to these Terms or the service shall be submitted to the exclusive jurisdiction of the South African courts.
